Media Ownership

Thank you for contacting me recently concerning media ownership and plurality.

I believe that a diverse, open and accountable media is crucial for the free flow of ideas and to challenge unhealthy concentrations of power.

The concentration of media power in too few hands is damaging to our democracy. No media owner should be able to exert undue influence and no media company should believe they are above the law. That is why Ed Miliband was absolutely right to stand up to powerful interests in our media during the phonehacking scandal.

The current system for protecting against these threats is inadequate. Labour’s manifesto makes clear that we will take steps to protect the principle of media plurality, so that no media outlet can get too big, including updating our rules for the 21st century media environment.

We also remain strongly committed to the implementation of the recommendations of the Leveson Inquiry. We expect the industry to establish a mechanism for independent self-regulation, which delivers proper redress for individuals, as set out in the Royal Charter, and agreed by all parties in Parliament.

I agree that the ownership and diversity of our media is a vital issue. That is why it is so important we have a Labour Government that can stand up to vested interests.

Thank you once again for writing to me and for sharing your views.
