Dear Sirs

I am writing to you to thank the 11,433 people in the Hitchin & Harpenden constituency who placed their trust in me to represent them as their Member of Parliament. Although I did not win, I was heartened that Labour made progress with 4,020 more people voting for us than in 2010.

I would also like to thank my political opponents, Peter Lilley (Conservative), Pauline Pearce (Liberal Democrat) and Richard Wise (Green) for fighting an unfailingly courteous and clean campaign. We respected each other both personally and politically – and for that I am enormously grateful.

Thankyou to the many hundreds of people who attended the hustings events over the course of the campaign. It is good to know that democracy is alive and well in our communities!

And thankyou to the many thousands of people who took the time to share their stories on the doorstep, in town or elsewhere. Please be assured that your experiences will help to rebuild the Labour Party after a disappointing election defeat.

One thing I have learnt over the course of this campaign is that you can’t judge someone’s voting intention by their postcode any more. I was often heartened by the support I received in what I thought were “True Blue” Tory areas. This lack of tribal affinity to party is both an encouragement and a challenge to the traditional ways of doing politics.

I, for one, am ready for the challenge but for that we need your help. Hitchin and Harpenden Labour’s small but extraordinarily dedicated band of volunteers did everything they could to get Labour’s message out across the constituency, but there is a lot more that we’d like to achieve. To that end, I ask everyone who shares our aims and values to join the party and get involved.
